The cottage is next door to Clowes lock and just a stone's throw away from Nicholsons Locks (Upper & Lower) on the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). This convenient location is only a 5-minute drive to the historic and beautiful village of Merrickville and is 40 minutes from Ottawa.
The land where the cottage now stands was originally acquired in 1831 by Col. John By for the construction of the Rideau Canal. Col. By was the Royal Military Engineer who architected the Rideau Canal and is the founder of Bytown - now known as Ottawa. A stay here is also an invitation to enjoy and celebrate the history of Canada. Experience canoeing through the locks of the Rideau Canal. Explore Clowes, Upper Nicholsons, and Lower Nicholsons locks. See for yourself how a 150-year-old swing bridge works! Wake up to magnificent river views, sit on the deck, and watch the boats go by. Enjoy the music of the birds, sounds of the waterfalls created by the two weirs on both sides of the cottage. Explore horseback riding at Heritage Stables that is a few steps from the cottage. Take a stroll through the vibrant Victorian village of Merrickville - dubbed as Canada's most beautiful village!
